Second International Jazz Festival Opens in Yerevan

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–"Kindness is hidden in jazz–and there is a search for new sounds in jazz," Chairman of the Union of Composers of Armenia Robert Amirkhanian said at the ceremonial opening of the second international jazz festival in Yerevan. Attending the opening were President Robert Kocharian–Minister of Culture–Youth Affairs and Sports Roland Sharoyan–other officials and cultural figures.

In accordance with the established tradition–the festival was opened by eminent musicians alongside young musicians Stepan Shakarian–Levon Malkhassian–Tigran Peshtmalchian and others. All of them gave performances together with the jazz band of Armenia conducted by Armen Martirossian and Armen Yusnunts. A pleasant surprise to the audience was the performance given by the well-known singer Datevik Hovhannissian.

During the next two days of the festival–musicians from different countries will demonstrate their art: the "Antilles" jazz-band from France–Stepan Kochyan’s trio–Chik Korea–the duet Kim Prevost-Bill Soley from the US–Peter Lipa from Slovakia–Frederich Noren’s jazz-band from Sweden–Harry Davidian from Romania–Alexander Zakarian’s jazz-band and Sergey Manukian’s trio from Russia.
