GLENDALE–The Western Regional Executive of Homenetmen announced this week that Ashkhen Pilvajian has been named as Honorary Chairwoman of the upcoming 25th Navasartian Games. Pilavjian–who is the widow of veteran Homenetmen member Alexan Pilvajian–made a generous donation of $25,000 on this occasion.
Pilvajian becomes the first woman to occupy this honorary coveted position.
During a recent visit with Pilvajian at her residence–she expressed that she had accepted the Regional Executive’s offer of the chairwomanship with great pleasure–thus honoring the memory of her late husband who was an active and important member of the Homenetmen.
Ashkhen Pilvajian was born in Aleppo–Syria. She attended the "Cilician" school and later graduated from the Armenian Sisters’ Academy of Aleppo. For six years she taught at a local kindergarten.
In 1955–she married Alexan Pilavjian–who was the most valuable player of the Homenetmen Syria soccer team.
In 1968–the Pilavjians–with their sons Vahridj and Peglar moved to Lebanon–where they led a very active life in the Homenetmen community. Following the civil war–the Pilvajian family moved to Los Angeles in 1977–becoming active members of the Homenetmen Los Angeles chapter.
Alexan Pilavjian has been able to instill in his family the values–traditions and goals of the Homenetmen. Today–both sons are active members of that organization–serving in leadership capacities on both regional and local levels.
At the conclusion of the meeting–Ashkhen Pilvajian expressed her gratitude to the 25th Navasartian Games organizing committee–the Western Regional Executive of Homenetmen all the volunteers who devote their time and energy to ensuring the Navasartian Games are a success.
