Johns Hopkins University Launches Family Planning Program

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–The "Healthy family and family planning" program to be implemented in the Lori region by the Johns Hopkins University under the patronage of the US Agency for International Development is aimed at solving family planning problems. Attending and speaking at the ceremonial launching of the program Monday were Head of the Lori regional administration Henrik Kochinian–Mayor of Vanadzor Samvel Darbinian and others. Acting Director of the "Save the Children" organization James Nathel pointed out the importance of the program. The speaker gave assurances that they will render all possible assistance in the program’s implementation.

Director of the Office of Public Information Service at John Hopkins University–Jacky Mac Ferson said that the problem of low birthrate in Armenia arouses concern–so 70 family planning centers were opened in the country–seven of them in the Lori region. The goal of the centers is assisting people in planning their families and providing consultations. The program also provides for an active campaign to be conducted on television and in the press.
