Bernard Buffet’s Widow Gran’s Painting to Armenia’s Picture Gallery

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Annabel Buffet–the widow of the renowned French painter Bernard Buffet–has granted her husband’s painting "Fishing-Boats in the Mouth of the River" (1991) to the National Picture Gallery of Armenia. National Picture Gallery Director Shahen Khachatrian told reporters that the painting will find its place in the Gallery’s modern French art section.

Khachatrian said that last October the first exhibition of Bernard Buffet’s works in Yerevan was visited by 600,000 people–an unprecedented figure in the last ten years. Two of Buffet’s canvases were granted to the Hermitage in St. Petersburg.

Khachatrian met with the business-manager of Bernard Buffet–Maurice Garnier–in Paris and asked him to grant one of the artist’s works to the National Picture Gallery. Eventually–"Fishing-Boats in the Mouth of the River" was granted to the Gallery. The price of this painting is admittedly evaluated at 650,000 fran’s. However–Garnier himself estimated it at 250,000 fran’s–as the transporting side must pay 30% of the estimated value of a given art-work at customs. The painting was brought to the country duty-free however due to the mediation of Humanitarian Commission Chairman Gagik Martirossian. Eighty per cent of the Gallery’s samples are obtained as donations–and in this regard the Gallery’s described as odd the above-mentioned practice at customs. He also announced that 400 works have been granted to the museum over the last nine years.

The Gallery’s Director also announced that exhibitions of Grigor Khanjian–Aramik Gharibian and young Armenian painters will be organized in the near future. Also–there will be an exhibition dedicated to the 1700th anniversary of the proclamation of Christianity as a state religion in Armenia. This exhibition will be entitled "Armenia and the Armenian Church".
