Azerbaijan Not Concerned Enough About POWs

STEPANAKERT (Noyan Tapan)–According to the information of the ICRC Stepanakert Office–about 500 prisoners of war have been released in the Karabakh conflict zone since 1992 with the assistance of ICRC. In 2000–three persons returned to their homeland.

Recently–representatives of human rights organizations from Armenia–Union for the "Development of Civil Society" and the Fund "Against Violation of Law"–visited the prisoners of war kept in Stepanakert. According to them–the prisoners of war did not complain about the conditions of their keeping but only dreamed of going back home.

"Unfortunately–Azerbaijan does not acknowledge Nagorno-Karabakh as an equal partner even in the issues of solving humanitarian problems. Baku often barefacedly denies the presence of prisoners of war from Karabakh–which–of course–does not promote the resumption of the process of their exchange," said Larisa Alaverdian–the Executive Director of the Fund "Against Violation of Law."
