Armenian Delegation Participates in Special Session of UN

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan) The special session of the UN General Assembly "Women in 2000: Equality between women and men–development and peace in the 21st century" was held in New York June 5-9. The session discussed the execution of the decisions made at the meeting of World Women Commission held in Beijing in 1995.

Head of the Armenian delegation–Armenia’s Permanent Representative to the UN Movses Abelian made a speech at the session. In his speech he addressed the issues of women’s social conditions in Armenia–their rights–the activities launched in Armenia in the context of the decisions of the Beijing meeting–as well as the programs of improving women’s conditions in Armenia. The role of women’s public movement in strengthening civil society and protection of women’s rights were also emphasized.

The session adopted a "Final Document" expounding on the execution of the Beijing decision as well as the strategy and programs of further activities.
