Hovanessian Say Foreign Ministry in Shambles

YEREVAN (RFE/RL)–During a public meeting Friday–chairman of the National Assembly commission on national security–defense and interior affairs Vahan Hovanessian severely criticized Armenian Foreign Ministry–saying that the department "is in shambles."

Hovanessian said that no other ministry operates as poorly as the foreign ministry.

"Often times we view our foreign ministry as merely a center for diplomatic operations coordination in Yerevan… Although–I don’t see major strides within the diplomatic realm," stated Hovanessian–who is a member of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation parliamentary bloc.

"The foreign ministry is that link–often times the only correct link–which is to secure investmen’s for our country–a proper image and–finally–to find allies not only in the political–but also in the economic sphere from the international arena. That has not been done–and that is the reason for my criticism," asserted Hovanessian.

"Armenia’s diplomatic establishment working outside of Armenia and that working in Yerevan are cut off from one another. This signals that there are wheels to be turned within the government which utilize enormous resources–and the wheels that are turning are not turning other wheels," analogized Hovanessian–explaining "The resources allocated for and spent on the foreign ministry from the budget–do not correspond with the output of the ministry."
