Louise Simone and Richard Manougian Donate $2 Million to Yerevan Cathedral Project

ETCHMIADZIN–Armenia–His Holiness Karekin II–Catholicos of All Armenia’s recently announced a donation of $2 million from Louise Manougian-Simone and her brother Richard Manougian for the ongoing construction of the St. Gregory the Illuminator Cathedral in the heart of Yerevan.

This is the second such donation toward the cathedral project from the benefactors–who had previously donated $3 million in memory of their parents Alex and Marie Manougian.

The construction of the cathedral was the brainchild of the late Catholicos Vazgen I–who envisioned this cathedral as a symbol of Armenia’s Christian roots. The groundbreaking was officiated by the late Catholicos Karekin I three years ago and on June 26–Catholicos Karekin II anointed the cathedral’s crosses.

The first Mass is scheduled to be said at the cathedral next year–on the occasion of the 1700th anniversary of Armenia’s adoption of Christianity as a state religion.

The construction of the cathedral complex continues in Yerevan at a fast pace. The Catholicosate announced that financial assistance would be needed to complete the project.

The skeleton of the main cathedral–with the domes and the crosses has already been completed and by year’s end–the facade of the complex is expected to be completed.
