YEREVAN (Armenpress)–Three Turkish servicemen that were apparently trying to steal cattle grazing on Armenian territory shot at Russian border guards who tried to stop them–said Russian officials.
The Russian troops fired warning shots in the air in response–and the Turkish troops retreated to their side of the border in the Monday night incident.
No casualties were reported. The Turkish troops had moved 300 meters into Armenian territory near the town of Gyumri when Russian guards approached and tried to detain them.
The officials said border posts in the area have been put on alert. The Turkish foreign ministry had no immediate comment on the incident. A joint Russian-Armenian border force patrols Armenia’s 210 mile border with Turkey.
