Results of Kocharian’s Visit to US Discussed

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–At his September 13 news conference–Presidential Spokesman Vahe Gabrielian informed journalists about Armenian President Robert Kocharian’s participation in the 55th session of the United Nations General Assembly Millennium Summit. Gabrielian pointed out that Robert Kocharian’s speech focused on the Karabakh settlement–the Armenian Genocide and globalization problems.

The president also participated in one of the roundtables as part of the millennium Summit that discussed the problems of security–struggle against poverty and globalization. Problems of forecasting and preventing conflicts–enhancing the efficiency of assistance rendered to poor countries by developed ones–developing high technologies in developing countries were discussed.

During the Millennium Summit–another Kocharian-Aliyev meeting was held. Gabrielian said that both presidents called it "a useful and important dialogue and announced their willingness to settle the conflict by peaceful means."

After the Summit ended–President Kocharian held meetings with Armenian businessmen in New York and Geneva–as well as with Diasporan hi-tech managers. During the meetings–President Kocharian pointed out that all conditions for foreign investment were created in Armenia: Stability–concerted activities of all the branches of power and laws protecting investors’ interests. "It is desirable that each Diasporan Armenian have his economic interests in Armenia," the president said.

Presenting the results of these meetings–Vahe Gabrielian reported that the Frank Muller watch-producing firm is developing programs on expanding its activities in Armenia–while separate businessmen are going to make investmen’s in Armenia’s banking sphere.

As for high technologies in Armenia–the spokesman’said that there are plans to open a 1,000-seat Internet-saloon and an exhibition of the latest information technologies near the Yerevan Institute of Physics.

Vahe Gabrielian underlined the importance of Robert Kocharian’s meetings with Diasporan members of the "Board of Executives and Shareholders of the Hi-Tech Sphere" Society. The spokesman noted that some of the Diasporan members of the Society have already set up their own businesses in Armenia and will be engaged in creating favorable conditions for the development of high technologies in our country.

As for the immediate plans of the President–Gabrielian announced that on September 24-28 President Kocharian will visit Russia–where he is scheduled to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin–Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov and other officials.
