NATO Secretary General Postpones Visit to Armenia

YEREVAN (Armenpress)–NATO Secretary-General George Robertson has postponed his visit to Armenia that was scheduled for September 28–Armenia’s foreign ministry told Armenpress. Robertson was due to arrive in the Armenian capital as part of his tour of the three south Caucasian states. The Armenian foreign ministry said the NATO chief has canceled the trip–citing "the necessity of the secretary-general’s presence in the NATO headquarters in Brussels for the duration of the presidential elections in Yugoslavia." Ministry officials said that they do not know whether the visits to Georgia and Azerbaijan have been canceled as well. Robertson was due to deliver a speech at an international conference in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi on September 27. The high-level gathering will discuss prospects for more active NATO involvement in the region.
