Bulgarian Armenian Wins Gold in Sydney

SYDNEY–Bulgarian-Armenian Armen Nazarian won a gold medal in Wednesday’s 58 kilogram Greco-Roman wrestling competition at the Sydney Olympic Games.

Nazarian beat South Korea’s Kim In-Sub to take the gold. During the semi-final competition–Nazarian also beat Germany’s Rifat Yedez–after the referee called him the winner.

At the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta–Nazarian won Armenia’s only gold medal in the 52-kilogram Greco-Roman wrestling competition.

In the K1 500 meter kayak race–Armenia’s Vladimir Krushkin was ranked fourth and made it to the semi-finals. He will represent Armenia in the 1000 meter kayak race.

In the 51 kilogram boxing competition–quarter-finalist Vakhtank Darchinian of Team Armenia lost to Kazakhstan’s Bulat Jumadilov.

Free-style wrestling competitions were scheduled to begin Thursday–with three athletes representing Armenia expected to take part in the sport.
