Petition Drive Lauched to Ensure Genocide Bill Vote

GLENDALE–The Armenian National Committee of America-Western Region announced the launch of a petition drive Friday–aimed at ensuring that the Armenian Genocide resolution–pending in the US House of Representatives–is brought to a vote on the House floor.

The two petitions–which will be circulating throughout the weekend at Armenian stores–centers and churches–are directed to House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) urging him to immediately bring the matter for a vote. Another petition is directed to Rep. Benjamin Gilman (R-NY)–chairman of the House International Relations Committee and Rep. Sam Gejdenson (D-Conn.)–the ranking Democrat on the said committee–urging them to immediately vote on the resolution in the committee.

Following a debate in the International Relations Committee Thursday–a vote on the Genocide Resolution was postponed to next week–due to delay tactics by Rep. Tom Lantos (D-Calif.) and Rep. Dan Burton (R-Ind.).

"The Armenian-American community strongly believes that this matter needs to be voted on by the US House of Representatives," said ANCA-WR Executive Director Alex Sardar–who added–"The petition drive is yet another avenue through which the Congressional leadership can understand the convictions of the Armenian-American community."

Look for ANCA-WR volunteers to approach community members over the weekend and support the call for the passage of the Armenian Genocide Resolution.
