Ambassador Dismisses Arkady Vardanian Allegations

YEREVAN (Armenpress)–Russia’s ambassador to Yerevan Anatoly Dryukov dismissed some recent allegations claiming that the anti-government activities launched by a Moscow-based businessman of Armenian origin Arkady Vardanian are backed by certain forces in Russia.

"I am entitled to declare that not a Russian force or a state structure is behind Vardanian’s activities," the ambassador said to the members of Armenian parliament committee on foreign relations on November 3.

As a Russian citizen he has the right to express his ideas and viewpoints–but only within the frames of Armenian laws–the ambassador said–adding that Vardanian had been warned against going beyond the boundaries of law ahead of October 30 mass rally.

The ambassador then said that the embassy could only provide legal assistance to Vardanian–to hire a lawyer for him and make sure his rights are not violated.
