Anti Armenian Hysteria Grows in Azerbaijan

YEREVAN (Armenpress)–Along with delegations from 30 countries–delegates from Armenia and Karabakh participated in the 5th forum of the Helsinki Civil Assembly held in Azerbaijan’s capital–Baku–from October 29 to November 1.

Speaking at a news conference Monday the chairman of the Yerevan Press Club–Boris Navasardian–said that it was crucial that the conference was held in Baku–"because acute discussions on regional issues is possible only if it is held under the roof of one of the sides."

Navasardian also said that the Karabakh delegates had to leave the conference hall after one of Azeri experts accused Karabakh of violating the rights of Azeris.

Janna Krikorova–a delegate from Karabakh noted that the delegation had left for Baku with a desire to launch a dialogue with Azeris–but it appeared that some Azeri participants were not ready for any discussion. Krikorova also said that hostility towards Armenia’s is growing because newspapers are filled with anti-Armenian articles and calls for war.

Krikorova said that the real number of Armenia’s living in Azerbaijan is not 30,000 as presented by the country’s leadership but 246 males and 1343 females. "Armenia’s in Azerbaijan are subject to everyday terror and intimidation," said Krikorova adding that they were warned against speaking Armenian in public places–"because it could arouse undesired consequences."

However–opinions expressed by Anahit Bayandur from Armenia were quite different. "We received a warm welcome in Azerbaijan," said Bayandur. Emin Yeritsian from Armenia’said he and a friend walked down a Baku street speaking Armenian–"but no one paid attention."
