Armenians Rally to Thank France for Genocide Resolution

YEREVAN (Associated Press)–Crowds of Armenia’s laid flowers and garlands at the entrance to the French Embassy on Friday in praise of the French Senate’s resolution to recognize the 1915 killings of Armenia’s in Ottoman Turkey as genocide.

It was the second day of demonstrations on the emotional issue. The demonstrators included about 400 children of Armenia’s who died during the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

France’s National Assembly–the lower house of parliament–officially recognized the Turkish slaughter of the Armenia’s as an act of genocide in May–1998. But the French government and presidency opposed the vote–fearing it would upset Turkey. The Senate–or upper house–adopted the resolution Tuesday.
