Writer Raffi’s Grave Desecrated

YEREVAN (Armenpress)–Unknown assailants desecrated the grave of well-known Armenian writer Raffi (Hagop Melk-Hagopian)–who is buried at Tbilisi’s Khodjavank cemetery.

On Tuesday–Georgian Parliament speaker Zurab Zhvania–accompanied by Armenia’s ambassador to Georgia Georgy Khosroyev visited the Khodjavank cemetery to assess the damage to Raffi’s grave. Georgian parliament members and Armenian community leader Genady Mouradyan also attended the assessment.

After the visit–Zhvania has called the desecration a "barbaric act," which must be condemned and stopped–reported Armenia’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson.

Zhvania urged the mayor of Tbilisi to immediately undertake measures to restore the grave and place round-the-clock guards at the city’s expense. He also advised the mayor to organize the renovation and restoration of the renowned Armenian cemetery in Tbilisi.
