Officials Discuss Alternative Military Service

YEREVAN (Armenpress)–Chairman of parliament committee on defense–national security and interior issues Vahan Hovanessian says that Armenia’should adopt a law on alternative military service. He said that some youths that are called into the military bribe middle and senior military officials to avoid obligatory military service.

According to deputy defense minister Arthur Aghabekian–if there is a law on an alternative service–the number of those avoiding military service may decrease from the current several thousands.

A senior official of the interior ministry said that as of November 1–the number of young men avoiding military service was 5,289. The government has to spend $1000 to bring one deserter from Russia to Armenia. He also endorsed alternative military service.

Communist parliament member Khoren Sarkisian suggested that the names of all those senior government officials and parliament members whose sons avoid military service be made public.
