Western Diocese Preview Reception for New Dickranian Complex

BURBANK–Over 300 guests gathered at the Diocesan headquarters in Burbank to attend the reception held December 3 by the Diocesan Ladies’ Auxiliary–to preview the completion of Phase I (of three) of the Diocesan Dickranian Complex.

The purpose of the reception was to acquaint the faithful of the completion of the many rooms and offices at the Diocesan headquarters and let them know of the items needed in order to start the second phase of construction–which is the Galleria and the Kalaydjian Hall.

The Primate–Archbishop Vatche Hovsepian welcomed everyone to the new Diocesan Complex. He explained how the previous headquarters–located on the second floor of the St. John Garabed Church in Hollywood–had to be evacuated back in 1994 due to the earthquake which caused the roof to collapse. The Diocese moved established its offices at the Sunday School rooms of St. Gregory Armenian Church–where it operated for three years.

In 1997–the Diocese purchased a property in Burbank as the site of their new headquarters and moved its offices that same year. Phase I–the renovation and expansion of rooms and offices–began as soon as all the money necessary for its completion was raised through generous donations. The archbishop said Phase II would be launched after all the required funds were raised.

It was announced that the cathedral to be erected will cost close to $2.3 million–and will be built according to the architecture of St. Hripsime cathedral in Armenia. Mr. Bob Barsam and members of the Diocesan Council escorted guided tours throughout the complex and explained its progress.

Some of the speakers of the day were: Mrs. Lily Ring Balian–Chairwoman of the Ladies’ Auxiliary; Mr. Bob Barsam–Chairman of the Building Committee and Executive Director of the WD Endowment Fund; Mr. Armen Hampar–Chairman of the Fund-Raising Committee and Vice-Chairman of the Diocesan Council; Mr. John Yaldezian–Treasurer of the Diocesan Council; Mr. Armen Melkonian–Armenian Consul General; and Mrs. Flora Dunaians–Chairwoman of the Orphan’s Fund. Mrs. Lucia TerPetrosyan–the former First Lady of Armenia–also spoke. There were numerous community representatives in attendance–including Viken Yacoubian representing the ARF Western Region Central Committee.
