US Military Delegation to Arrive in Yerevan

YEREVAN (ARMENPRESS)–A US military delegation–led by General Charles Simpson–who is the head of Planning and Politics Department with European stationed American troops–is to arrive today in Yerevan to hold talks with senior Armenian military officials.

The US delegation will meet with the Deputy Armenian Defense Minister Michael Harutunian to sign an agreement–US embassy military attach Erick Von Tersch told reporters on Monday. He said the next US administration will place great emphasis on the upcoming agreement. The US and Armenian military are also expected to dwell upon some issues related to rescuing activities in case of emergency situations. Also an arrangement on reciprocal visits of Armenian and US defense ministers is to be reached.

Tersch also said his government plans to release close to $300,000 dollars for organization of mine-clearing training courses. In his words–a total of $1.3 million dollars will be spent on training courses for Armenian border troops. The project is supposed to be concluded by the end of 2001. He said the US government had released $390,000 dollars to Armenia to dig artesian wells in Armenia’s northern regions to secure irrigation water in the case of droughts. He also said $165,000 of this money had already been spent. Another $100,000 has been provided to the Armenian Emergency Service for starting joint cooperation projects.

In conclusion–Von Tersch expressed that "US policy is not to dictate but to help conflicting sides to find solutions."
