UNESCO Carrying Out Activities On Occasion of 1700th Anniversary of Proclamation of Christianity in Armenia

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Since the 1995 adoption of the UNESCO 20th General Assembly resolution under which the 1700th anniversary of proclamation of Chirstianity in Armenia was recognized as humanity’s entering a new era–the organization has been carrying out a number of measures dedicated to this date.

Due to the resolution–the 1700th anniversary became an event of internatonal importance–and the Committee has already carried out a number of measures. An international festival of sacred music and a conference attended by performers and musicologists from different countries was organized in 1999. A similar festival is expected to be organized next spring.

Among the measures emphasized was the concert and exhibition of works of talented children to be held at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris next summer. A summer camp will also be organized for children ages 12-16 from Abkhazia–Nagorno Karabakh–South Ossetia and Daghestan.

An international conference of donor-countries on the development of tourism in Armenia is expected to be held in Yerevan from Octover 2-4–2001. An interregional conference is also expected to be held to elaborate mechanisms of responsibility for preservation of historical monumen’s in different countries. It is the destruction of Armenian historical monumen’s in Turkey–Azerbaijan–and Georgia that necessitates the holding of this conference–as all the complaints to the UNESCO have not brought any results.
