Russian Official Comments On Security of Communications

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–In an interview with representatives of the Armenian media–Chairman of the International Relations Committee of the Russian State Duma Dmitry Rogozin said it would be advisable that Armenia and Azerbaijan entrust Russia with the role of guarantor of the security of the transport communications between Karabakh and Armenia–Azerbaijan and Nakhijevan.

In his opinion–if there are other mediators in this issue–such as Turks or Americans–"the conflict begins to bring in an effect of internationalization–for each party has ambitions of its own."

"Both the Armenia’s and Azeris know about Russian ambitions–they have gotten used to them–and it is easier to come to terms with Russia as to the limit of these ambitions–just like we know the ambitions of the Armenia’s and the ambitions of the Azeris," Rogozin stated.

Rogozin emphasized that the need for cooperation between Armenia and Russia to ensure regional security in the Transcaucasus–and that it is a crucial time for Armenia as everybody is waiting for results from the Key West–Florida meeting.

Rogozin also pointed out that Karabakh-related problems are urgent for Russia as well. Russia also has an enclave–the Kaliningrad region–and it is interested in maintaining a tie between the mainland and its enclave territory.

Rogozin met with President Robert Kocharian on March 31. The presidential press service quoted Kocharian underlining the importance of boosting interparliamentary relations.

Highly appreciating Armenian-Russian strategic cooperation–both sides pointed out the significance of expanding mutual cooperation within various international organizations–exchange of information as well as holding regular inter-parliamentary meetings. They also spoke about the foreign policy priorities of the two countries and exchanged views on prospects of CIS development.
