Karabakh Recognizes Servicemen

STEPANAKERT (Armenpress)–On May 9–Karabakh marked Victory Day–the liberation of Shoushi–and Army Day. During the official ceremony in the Karabakh Parliament–NKR President Arkady Ghoukasian signed a decree awarding the late Arthur Mkrtichian (former president of the Karabakh Parliament) with the Order of St. Gregory the Illuminator. The medal was presented to Mkrtichian’s widow Gohar Mkrtichian. Another medal was awarded in memory of famous Karabakh freedom fighter Bedros Ghevondian (Bedo) for his dedication to the armed forces of Karabakh. The "Golden Eagle" medal was presented to Bedo’s sister. St. Gregory the Illuminator orders were also bestowed upon community-political figures John Andrian (deceased)–Lazr Kasparian (deceased)–Sergei Shakarian–Henrik Poghosian (deceased)–and writer-historian Bagrat Ulubabian. The "St. Mesrop Mashdots" medal was presented to Boris Dadamian for his efforts at bringing about economic development in Karabakh. "Martial Service" medals were awarded to nine individuals. In addition–296 soldiers were recognized for their efforts in the liberation of Shoushi–36 of which are deceased. Medals were also awarded to 186 individuals for their personal courage and contribution to Karabakh’s defense. Nine people received the first degree "Martial Cross" and 33 were awarded with the second degree "Martial Cross" in honor of their outstanding bravery. Attending the awards ceremony were NKR Parliament President Oleg Yesayan–Defense Minister Seyran Ohanian–and Artsakh Primate Arch. Barkev Martirosian.
