Speaker of Armenian Parliament Leaves Party

YEREVAN (Armenpress)–Armen Khachatrian –Speaker of the Armenian Parliament announced Tuesday his departure from the Armenian People’s Party (APP). In his announcement–Khachatrian stated that "after October 27–the party–having strong political beliefs inherited from Karen Demirchian–was not able to keep its unity and restore its regular activity." According to Khachatrian–he wanted the party to keep the traditions inherited from its leader during the period after the assassinations. However–the new leadership of the party began establishing new morals. Furthermore–sanctions were and are being used against those members of the party who expressed disagreement with the new leadership. Khachatrian added that many party members who were close to Karen Demirchian have been expelled or isolated.

Khachatrian stated that the current leadership does not follow the party’s main political principles. He accuses them of cooperating with forces who were Karen Demirchian’s rivals. Khachatrian said he tried bringing the leadership back to Karen Demirchian’s political direction–but feeling that the situation is hopeless–he announced his resignation from the party. According to him–all those who follow Karen Demirchian’s principles will unite and continue his work.
