Unity Faction Elects New Secretary

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–The Unity parliamentary faction held a meeting following the meeting of the National Assembly held on July 27–where the secretary of the faction–People’s Party of Armenia member Vardan Mkrtichian–was relieved of his post and was replaced by Gagik Voskanian–who recently left the PPA.

Talking to journalists–Grigor Harutiounian–a member of the PPA who boycotted the meeting–said they were invited to the meeting under the pretext of summarizing the results of the session. But at the very beginning of the meeting the Parliament members who had left the PPA unanimously raised the issue of the faction’s secretary. "I consider it to be immoral," Harutiunian said. According to him–even if there was a problem–the Parliament members as well as current and former PPA members–could gather and solve it independently. Harutiunian also pointed out that under the agreement reached in 1999 chairman of the faction must be appointed by the RPA council and the secretary must be appointed by the PPA Council.

Vice-Speaker of the Parliament Gagik Arslanian–who recently left the PPA said: "I think that the minority (remaining PPA members) represented in the "Unity" faction cannot nominate a secretary. The number of deputies who left the PPA is more–and they can nominate their candidate." According Arslanian–in future elections the faction must express a unanimous opinion–which will be the first step towards ensuring political stability.
