Leading Parliament Factions Condemn Reconciliation Commission

YEREVAN (Armenpress)–Several leading political factions working within the Armenian National Assembly–issued a joint declaration Tuesday condemning the so-called Turkish-Armenian Reconciliation Commission.

Among the parties adding their signature to the statement are the National Democratic Union–the Communist Party of Armenia–the Republican Party of Armenia–the Armenian Revolutionary Federation–the People’s Party of Armenia–the Constitutional Rights Union–the Country of Law party–as well as the Democratic Representative group–the Agroindustrial Democratic Union and the Hayastan group.

The political groups said that Ankara wants thereby to stave off international recognition of the 1915 genocide.

The statement reads:

"Recently–a suspicious process to including the issue of relations between Turkey and Armenia agenda has begun–which can endanger real possibilities for establishment of relations.

"Given that until today–Armenia does not have a distinct foreign policy strategy and realizing the imperative for the normalization of relations between the two neighboring countries–we feel obliged to declare that Turkey–by continuing to deny the 1915 Armenian Genocide and to blockade Armenia–as well as taking sides in the Karabakh conflict resolution process–is displaying its unwillingness to establish relations with Armenia.

"Taking these matter into consideration–we find that

"Attempts to hide the historical truth and initiatives aimed at an artificial reconciliation can not contribute to the establishment of normal relations efforts

"Such actions indirectly aim to remove the fact of the Armenian Genocide from agenda and ensure Turkey’s meaningful presence in the Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) negotiations."

"It is unacceptable to weaken the process of garnering international recognition for the Armenian Genocide and split the united Armenian front and prevent this process–which has gained momentum within the international arena.

"The signatories announce that Armenian-Turkish bilateral relations can be established only through authorized legal representatives."
