Peace Corps Undertakes Health Education Program

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–The American Peace Corp organization is implementing a new Public Health Education Program in Armenia. In previous years the organization administered English and small business training programs.

The volunteers of the "Peace Corps" organization–whose headquarters is in Washington–US–render assistance to 84 countries. The organization has worked in Armenia’since 1992–at the invitation of the Armenian government. Volunteers must first study Armenian and then work within the framework of their programs.

Manager of the courses and programs implemented by the Peace Corps–Armine Poghikian–said that volunteers work in family planning centers–Research Center of Mother and Child’s Health–as well as in other medical establishmen’s.

In Armenia the organization is in cooperation with the Ministry of Science and Education–Ministry of Industry and Trade–and other government agencies. During the organization’s nine-years of service in Armenia 250 volunteers have worked there.

Poghikian hopes that the next program to be implemented by the organization in Armenia will be an environmental one.
