ARS to Participate in UN’s Annual NGO Conference

WATERTOWN–Mass.–In conjunction with the United Nations General Assembly’s proclamation of the year 2001 as the International Year of Volunteers–the 54th DPI/NGO Annual Conference — entitled "NGOs Today: Diversity of the Volunteer Experience" — will be held in September 10-12–2001 at the UN headquarters in New York City.

The Executive Committee of Non-Governmental Organizations Associated with the United Nations Department of Public Information (NGO/DPI) defines the theme of the Conference as follows: "While NGOs associated with the UN strive to be more professional–more inclusive and more accountable in their work–it is the spirit of volunteerism that provides the people-power–the energy and the bulk of the funds to carry out their diverse activities. The conference will explore the diversity of the volunteer experience around the world and identify ways in which this essential spirit can be amplified and put to better use."

The Armenian Relief Society–an NGO on the Roster in Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council of the UN–will attend this conference with a large delegation consisting of members from the East and West Coasts of the United States. On this occasion–the ARS has sponsored a one-and-a half hour workshop entitled "Philanthropy and Volunteerism" scheduled for Tuesday–Sept. 11–1:15pm – 2:45p.m. in Conference Room C. This workshop–which will be moderated by Maryanne Bonjuklian–ARS NGO representative–will have the following speakers: Maral Chalian–Project Coordinator–United Armenian Fund; Janet Haroyan–Rotary Club Member–Alderman for the City of Edwardville–Illinois; and Kristina A. Kazarian–Independent Research Fellow and Author of "New Philanthropy Benchmarking."
