Anti Aircraft Defense System Powerful Force

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Anatoly Kvashnin–the Chief of the General Staff of the Russia–disagreed with the report published in the October 3 issue of the Washington Post–quoting sources in the Pentagon–that 1,000 troops of the US Army had landed in Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. According to Kvashnin–even if the special operation is planned–it is doomed to failure.

Kvashnin reiterated that Russia’s participation in the retaliatory action in Afghanistan would be limited to provision of operative information. The matter concerns exchange of data not only about facilities of the terrorist organization based in the territory of Afghanistan–but also about the Northern Alliance to avoid possible air strikes on the facilities of this Alliance. Besides–a search and rescue service would be operating in the territory of Tajikistan in case pilots on mission in Afghanistan are in trouble. Russia will also manage the task of humanitarian aid to people who may become refugees as a result of operations in Afghanistan.

Answering Noyan Tapan’s question about plans for Armenia in case of emergencies–taking into account the fact that Armenia’s air space may be used by the US Air Force for flights–Mikael Haroutiunian–the Chief of the General Staff of the RA Armed Forces–said that dates–altitudes and tasks of flights would be coordinated with Armenia’s leadership. Anatoly Kvashnin–for his part–said that the Americans would hardly treat tasks connected with risks to civilians with negligence.

Kvashnin attached particular importance to the establishment of a common anti-aircraft defense system to oppose international terrorism that looms large in the modern-day world. In crossing territories of states airplanes are provided with air corridors–and any deviation–including in terms time–is regarded as a violation. According to Kvashnin–the common system is designed to exclude cases similar to the September 11 attacks on the United States. "The better the system is–the fewer chances the hijackers will have," Kvashnin concluded.
