CE Officials Urge Armenia to Speed Up Efforts to Improve Refugee Situation

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Wermut Mongolt–the rapporteur of the Council of Europe Commission for Migration–Refugees and Demography–has not noticed any change in the refugee situation in Armenia’since 1997. During her meeting with Gagik Tadevosian–the chairman of the National Assembly’s standing commission for social–public health and nature protection affairs–Mongolt said that the state must pay greater attention to refugees.

Gagik Tadevosian reportedly stated that the parliament has worked to the best of its abilities to improve the refugee situation.

Wermut Mangolt also met with the Armenian National Assembly’s delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. Hovhannes Hovhannissian–the head of the delegation–said that the Armenian parliament has adopted two principles on refugee affairs: to keep the issue safe from political speculations and to work as much as possible to help refugees integrate into society. It was pointed out that the process of acquiring citizenship has been simplified–refugees are enabled to privatize their apartmen’s–hostels–and other allocations have been made from the state budget to construct apartmen’s for them.
