Aram I Protects St. Magar Monestary

YEREVAN (Armenpress)–During His trip to Cyprus–Catholicos Aram I met with the President and the Prosecutor General of Cyprus Markidis. During their meetings–Catholicos Aram stressed the importance of the preservation of the St. Magar Monastery which he said was an important historical landmark for Armenia’s. The Catholicos spoke about reports he had written to political and social organizations throughout the Middle East dealing with this issue–and the Prosecutor General assured the Catholicos that he would personally present this issue to the European Council’s Human Rights Committee. The St. Magar Monastery is currently under Turkish occupied territory–and the Turkish government plans to convert the Monastery into a hotel.

Catholicos Aram I of the Great House of Cilicia–is in Cyprus presiding over the 1700th anniversary celebrations of the proclamation of Christianity as a state religion in Armenia. The week-long Jubilee celebrations–which are organized by the Armenian Prelacy–included a Book Exhibition–and Exhibition of paintings by Armenian Cypriot artists with Armenian religious themes–and a Concert of Sacred music by a Choir from Armenia.
