Senior ARF Official Expresses Concern Over Regional Developments

YEREVAN (Armenpress)–A senior member of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation called on March 30 for reshaping Armenia’s foreign policy in the light of recent global and especially regional developmen’s.

Speaking to reporters in Yerevan–Garo Armenian–member of the ARF Bureau–said Armenia’s foreign policy is subject to strong pressure.

According to Armenian–US penetration to neighboring Georgia must be taken into account while reformulating Armenian foreign policy.

"The main thing is that Armenian foreign policy should not lose ground," he said.

According to the ARF official–Armenian foreign policy acts within very limited frames. "In this respect," he said–"the additional role of the Armenian Diaspora–no doubt–will enlarge Armenia’s foreign policy possibilities in western political arenas."

He went on to say that US presence in Georgia was causing serious concerns in the region and "we believe that Armenia’should also be concerned with it".

"The US military presence in Georgia is presented so far as being tended to regional stability–but every such phenomenon may have its aftereffects and possible consequences of this presence for Javakhk and Abkhazia are in our constant focus," he said–adding that the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) should start a dialogue on this issue with the US security council staff.

He also claimed that the regional developmen’s are not tended for normalization of the Armenian-Turkish relationship.

"There is one problem now–the US main regional ally is Turkey and as the genocide issue stands between Armenia and Turkey–the recognition of the Armenian Genocide becomes crucial for regional stability. Hence–Europe’s and US attempts to force Armenia and Turkey to improve relations would be natural," he said.
