Putin Urges Quick Resolution to Karabakh Conflict

SOCHI (Armenpress)–Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed hope that the Armenian-Azerbaijani dialogue on the peaceful resolution of the Karabakh conflict will continue.

During a meeting with the national security secretaries of the four Caucasian Countries in the Russian resort town of Sochi last Saturday–Putin said Moscow would continue to keep the conflict regulation efforts in focus of its foreign policy.

Putin called on the conflicting sides to continue their search for an option that would be acceptable for all.

"One of the main preconditions–the good will of both presidents–is in place," he said–but added that it was "a very complicated and sensitive problem."Both Armenia–Azerbaijan and all the regional countries are interested in the soonest resolution of the conflict," he said.

Concluding the meeting–Armenian–Georgian–and Russian security council secretaries–Armenian Defense Minister Serzh Sarkisian–and the head of the Azerbaijani presidential executive staff issued a joint statement which says they are willing "to step up joint efforts in combating international terrorism–organized crime–illegal arms trade–illegal migration and illegal drug-trafficking in the Caucasian region".

The statement also reads that the security council secretaries also see it as necessary "to take proper measures at internal state levels to intensify the involvement of the Caucasian states in the activity of the CIS anti-terrorist center."

This also concerns the implementation of CIS programs on combating international terrorism–other manifestations of extremism and drug trafficking.

The participants in the meeting also confirmed in the statement that a peaceful–fair and firm settlement of local conflicts on the basis of common international legal standards and principles is an important precondition for security and stability in the Caucasus.

The parties to the talks agreed to comprehensively support the expansion of humanitarian cooperation–promote exchanges of cultural valuables and theatrical and artistic delegations–and hold ethnic Caucasian traditional cultural events.
