Melkumian Vows to Protect Independence

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Nagorno Karabakh is ready to compromise with Azerbaijan–unless it threatens its independence–Karabakh Foreign Minister Naira Melkumian said at a May 2 news conference in Stepanakert. Melkumian does not consider the process of the Karabakh conflict settlement as satisfactory.

The foreign minister said that during her recent visits to Paris and Moscow–the French and Russian officials expressed opinion that it is impossible to work out real ways of the conflict’s settlement without the effective participation of Karabakh.

Melkumian expressed dissatisfaction with the fact that unlike recognized countries–Karabakh does not receive assistance in some spheres from international organizations. She emphasized that the fact that a country has not been recognized must not hamper the promotion of living standards in the country.

The foreign minister said the Council of Europe is holding discussions over the appointment of a special reporter on Nagorno Karabakh.
