ANCA Welcomes Kelikian Appointment to Holocaust Council

Noted Scholar to join Set Momjian as second Armenian-American on panel

WASHINGTON–President George W. Bush has appointed Dr. Alice Arshalooys Kelikian–the noted Armenian American scholar–to the US Holocaust Memorial Council–reported the Armenian National Committee of America. Kelikian will join Clinton appointee Set Momjian as the second Armenian American on the 68-member panel–which serves as the governing body for the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.

Kelikian is the second Armenian American appointed by the Bush Administration. The first–Joseph Bogosian–serves as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Transportation and Machinery.

A graduate of Princeton and Harvard–Dr. Kelikian currently serves as Associate Professor of History at Brandeis University and is an Affiliate of the Minda de Gunzburg Center for European Studies at Harvard University. Her area of scholarly expertise is modern Italy. She has published numerous academic articles on social–political–and religious history. The Oxford University Clarendon Press published her book "Town and Country and Fascism," and she is currently finishing "Bella Figura," a man’script that examines the cult of appearance in Italian society from the 1870s until World War II.

A Senate nominee and Presidential appointee to the United States Commission for the Preservation of America’s Heritage Abroad–Kelikian served two terms as a Commissioner (1996-2002). She was a National Vice-Chair of the Dole for President Finance Committee in 1995 and 1996. She also worked as a Vice-Chair of the Elizabeth Dole for President Exploratory Committee in 1999. She is currently a Leader on the finance team of the Dole 2002 Senate campaign in North Carolina.

Kelikian is one of 11 Presidential appointees to a five-year term on the US Holocaust Memorial Council. She is the fourth Armenian American to have served on the Council. The others have been former California Governor George Deukmejian–Diane Asadorian and Set Momjian. The Council consists of 55 Presidential appointees–10 Members of Congress and 3 ex-officio members from various branches of the federal government.
