Armenian Delegation Postpones Krasnodar Trip

YEREVAN (Armenpress)–The Armenian parliament delegation members have postponed their visit to the southern Russian city of Krasnodar–the scene of recent ethnic tension. The trip was decided to be put off at the request of Krasnodar authorities.

The decision to dispatch an Armenian delegation to Krasnodar followed alarming reports from the Russian city about clashes between local Cossacks and national minorities including Armenia’s. Recently–an Armenian cemetery in the city was rampaged by members of local skinheads and two dozens of tombstones were damaged and vandalized.

Chairman of the parliament committee on foreign relations Hovanes Hovanesian said the Armenian side gets the impression that the authorities in Krasnodar are avoiding meeting with Armenian lawmakers–although they say the request to put off the visit is because of a planned visit by Russian President Vladimir Putin to the region. Hovanesian said the date of the visit will soon be announced by Russian ambassador in Yerevan.
