Abkhazia to Boost Ties with Armenia

YEREVAN (Caspian News Agency)–Abkhaz Foreign Minister Sergey Shamba spoke for an all-round strengthening of relations with Armenia. In an interview with an Arminfo correspondent he said that Armenia and Russia ought to be more interested for cooperation–because three nations live in the state of Abkhazia.

The Abkhaz leadership–the minister added–is currently trying to attract the attention of Russia’s and Armenia’s to public life in Abkhazia and increase their presence in all power structures. As Sergey Shamba stated–the state policy of Abkhazia is directed toward the integration of ethnic groups in order to establish a civil society without any national distinction.

"The Abkhaz foreign minister noted that the process of people’s return has gained momentum and it is very interesting that the number of Armenia’s are more than the representatives of other nationalities."

The Armenian leadership knows that there is a large Armenian community in Abkhazia–about 50,000 people–and there are also more than 40 Armenian schools–the minister said.

"Armenia is doing for them whatever it can–for example–provides the schools with textbooks. We are establishing contacts with various political forces in Armenia," Sergey Shamba said.
