Envoy Says Canada Must Recognize Genocide

YEREVAN (Armenpress)– "It is quite clear that US has a great influence on Canada–but I do not share the opinion that Canada can recognize the Armenian Genocide only after the US does.

The Canadian government should come to a conclusion that the recognition of Armenian Genocide is more important than relations with Turkey. Our goal is to convince Canadian authorities this," said Armenian Ambassador to Canada Ara Papian during a meeting with reporters.

Ambassador Papian expressed an assurance that we can convince Canada to recognize the Armenian Genocide only by consecutive work. "A country like Canada cannot follow the principles of democracy and human rights from one side and refuse to recognize the genocide from the other. This is a contradiction which should be eliminated," said the ambassador–adding that everything also depends on the Armenian side’s work. Papian said each country has its own primary tasks and the issue of Armenian Genocide is not among them for Canada.

According to Papian–the Canada-Armenia friendship group and its leader–member of Canadian Parliament Sargis Assadourian are conducting extensive work towards the recognition of Genocide by the Canadian government.

The ambassador also stated that on April 24 a reception was held in the Canadian Parliament–which was attended by the Canadian foreign minister–ministers of culture–emigration–state secretary on oriental issues–and deputies from Latin American countries.

It should also be stated that a bill on Armenian Genocide recognition has already been approved by the Parliamen’s of Ontario and Quebec states.
