Armenian Delegation Leaves for Krasnodar

YEREVAN (Armenpress)–An Armenian parliament delegation is leaving today for a one-day visit to the southern Russian city of Krasnodar–the scene of recent inter-ethnic tension involving members of local Armenian communities.

Delegation leader Hovanes Hovanesian–who is also the chairman of the committee on foreign relations–said the delegation also includes Parliament Members Armen Rustamian–Armen Mkhitarian–Deputy Trade And Economy Development Minister Ara Petrosian–Deputy Culture Minister Alice Adamian–Deputy Regional Minister Vache Terterian and a senior advisor to the foreign minister.

The delegation will meet with Krasnodar Governor Alexander Tkachov and other officials–as well as with members of the Armenian community.

Meanwhile the Union of Armenia’s of Russia along with the administration of the Krasnodar territory works out a 10-year investment program directed to economic development of the territory–said UAR President Ara Abrahamian at the May 26 meeting that took place at the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia. He pointed out that the UAR managed to stop the "serious situation," in which the heads of Armenian communities and the UAR branches were already involved. There are 700,000 Armenia’s and 55 UAR branches in the territory. Abrahamian talked about what he had done in–including his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin–Governor of the Krasnodar territory Aleksander Tkachev–and the Armenian population of the territory. He emphasized that the federal powers treated the problem with understanding and find it the responsibility of local authorities.

Governor Tkachev–according to him–agreed to the UAR’s suggestion that instead of opposition it would be better to use the Armenian potential in favor of the territory–to raise the economic welfare of the territory. Also an offer was accepted to create a fund for restoring the destroyed Armenian cemeteries. As far as the 10-year program is concerned–according to the UAR president–it will be submitted in 1-2 months. The deputy governor of the territory and a UAR representative are responsible for working out the program. Tkachev also promised to see that no obstacle is raised against Armenian candidates for deputy during elections. "We will see that no nationality problem interferes with conducting elections–since first of all these are citizens of the Russian Federation," said Abrahamian–adding that the problem is not new but if the problem is realized–the situation will be normalized as well.
