Aliyev Puts The Blame On Armenia’s And Former Soviet Regime

YEREVAN (Armenpress)–Azerbaijani President Heydar Aliyev has blamed the dire social and economic conditions in his native Nakhichevan on Armenia–accusing it of blockading the exlcave from Azerbaijan.

Aliyev made the accusations when inaugurating a newly built athletic complex in Nakhichevan–which he said was built with the initiative of his son Ilham–the president of Azerbaijani Olympic Committee.

Aliyev went on to blame former Soviet authorities who "had given the historical region of Zangezour to Armenia–cutting thus Nakhichevan from Azerbaijan proper."

In reference to Karabakh regulation–he said Baku was for peaceful solution–but he did not refer to his recent announcement about a swap option–but called instead for increasing the efficiency of the armed forces so as "to be able to negotiate with Armenia from the position of strength."
