Armenian President Goes to Lithuania to Discuss Bilateral Ties

VILNIUS (ITAR-TASS)–Armenian President Robert Kocharian arrived on Monday–June 24 in Lithuania for a three-day official visit to discuss bilateral ties in political–trade–economic and cultural spheres.

This is the first visit by an Armenian president since the two countries declared independence. President Kocharian is expected to meet Lithuanian President Valdas Adamkus–Speaker Arturas Paulauskas–Prime Minister Algirdas Brazauskas–as well as sign an inter-governmental agreement on defense cooperation.

Lithuania and Armenia established diplomatic relations in 1991. So far–there is only one inter-governmental agreement–on avoiding double taxation–in force between the two countries.

Trade and economic relations between the two countries are scarce. Armenia was placed 32 on the export list of Lithuania’s foreign trade partners in 2001–and 67 on the import list. Lithuania’s exports to Armenia last year made up a meager $4. 61 million–while imports amounted to $2. 26 million.
