Al Qaeda Supported Azerbaijan in Late 80s

YEREVAN (Armenpress)–The Washington Profile American independent information center announced on June 27 that "militants from Al-Qaeda first came to Azerbaijan in late 80s to provide a support to Azerbaijan in its war against Armenia for re-establishment of a control over Nagorno Karabakh."

According to American sources–1500 Afghani Modjaheds arrived in Azerbaijan in September of 1993. "By summer of 1994 their number increased up to 2500. After sustaining heavy losses in battles against Armenia’s–the Afghani brigade was disbanded but its members moved to other volatile regions in the Southern Caucasus," writes The Washington Profile.
