Baiburd Opposes Withdrawal of Russian Troops From Javakhk

JAVAKHK (Yerkir)–Van Baiburd–an ethnic Armenian deputy in the Georian Parliament–has said that the Parliament’s decision to withdraw from CIS is sheer retaliation for Russian air force strikes in the Pankisi gorge; as a result–Baiburd is refusing to vote. Baiburd also opposes the Parliament’s decision calling for the removal of Russian military bases from Georgia.

Public Rally to be Held in Javakhk

A public rally is to be held on September 12 in Akhalkalak to protest the removal of the Russian military base there. Akhalkalak is a town in the southern Georgian region of Javakhk; its population is predominantly ethnic Armenian. Several organizations have announced the protest rally–and have called on the people of Javakhk to participate.

According to sources in Tbilisi–the decision to remove the Russian base from Akhalkalak will be taken by September 13.

Political organizations in Javakhk have asked the Akhalkalak Sakrebulo (the regional parliament) to call an extraordinary session to discuss the issue.
