Ordway Encourages Armenia Turkey Cooperation

YEREVAN (Armenpress)–During a press conference yesterday–US Ambassador to Armenia John Ordway stressed the need for Armenia and Turkey to establish ties–saying: "A number of difficulties hinder the adjustment of Armenian-Turkish relations and in order to overcome these difficulties the two countries must display good-will and take concrete steps."

He said that both the president and foreign minister of Armenia have been positive about establishing relations with Turkey and the US supports this position. "But when saying relations we mean larger spectrum: aside from inter-governmental relations–cooperation must be established between organizations and people’s groups," said Ordway.

Ordway also acknowledged certain forces in both countries that view the effectiveness of such relations with skepticism–but said that such ties may create grounds for further normalization of relations–and perhaps result in positive economic developmen’s in both countries. "We clearly expressed our position to Ankara that it would be effective if the first steps towards the normalization of relations are taken by Turkey," stressed Ordway.
