Argentina’s Socialist Parties Merge ARF Participates

YEREVAN (ARF Press Office)–The Socialist People’s Party of Argentina held its last convention on September 13 in the Buenos Aires "Armenia" center. ARF Bureau member Mario Nalbandian–who represents the ARF in Socialist International–and ARF South America Central Committee member Pedro Muradian–attended the convention. Nalbandian addressed the convention with welcoming remarks.

The convention was organized to review the activities of the outgoing executive–and to elect delegates for the next day’s convention where Argentina’s two socialist parties–the Socialist People’s Party and the Social Democratic Party–were to announce their merger.

The Socialist People’s Party of Argentina is a full-fledged member of Socialist International; and its Secretary General Ruben Gustiniani is a member of Socialist International’s Financial and Organizational Committee.

At the September 14 joint convention–the two socialist parties announced their merger. Representatives from 15 Latin American socialist and social democratic parties–as well as the General Secretary of the Socialist International Women’s Organization–Marlen Haas–representatives from the Social-Democratic Party of Italy and Socialist Party of France–and ARF Bureau member Mario Nalbandian were all present.

The convention put an end to the 44-year rift between the two parties. After numerous attempts–the leaders of the two parties–in view of the country’s socio-economic crisis–managed to take mature steps towards opening a new page in the socialist thinking particularly of Argentina and generally of Latin America.

Professor Alfredo Pravo was elected president–and Ruben Giustinini general secretary of the joint Socialist Party of Argentina.
