Local NGO Dispatches 500 Observers

According to Armenpress–a local non-governmental organization called ‘It Is Your Choice,’ said it would carry out the though task of monitoring the October 20 local elections in 600 communities across Armenia.

A team of 500 observers will closely monitor the election process in eight election commissions and some 235 precincts. The head of the organization–Harutyun Hampartsumian told a news conference on Thursday that the observers had undergone special training courses covering both large and minor details.

The organization has published a special guide book for monitors to help resolve any on the spot problems. It also organized a series of debates among hopefuls to help voters become acquainted with candidates.

Hampartsumian said an examination of several voter registries revealed that some of them lacked signatures of related police department chiefs responsible for issuing passports and keeping records.

In Gyumri and Vanadzor–the organization uncovered hundreds of names of the deceased in voter registries–while dozens of names of those actually living in the community were missing.
