State of Monumen’s in Azerbaijan Raises Concerns

YEREVAN (Armenpress)–Armenian Foreign Minister Vartan Oskanian criticized the authorities of Azerbaijan for the systematic demolition of Armenian architectural and historical monumen’s located on its territory.

Speaking at the conference organized by the National Academy of Sciences–which was prompted by alarming reports of thousands of Armenian monumen’s being destroyed in Azerbaijan–Oskanian said the conference is being emphasized by Armenian authorities not only in terms of culture but in terms of politics as well.

The focus of the conference was on the Armenian monumen’s in Azerbaijan’s autonomous republic of Nakhichevan–where according to confirmed reports–thousands of Armenian khachkars (cross stones) were destroyed by Azerbaijanis.

Foreign Minister Oskanian said he sent a letter to UNESCO last year requesting that a commission be dispatched to the region to observe the state of monumen’s. Upon receiving his letter–UNESCO sent a delegation and the destruction of the monumen’s stopped. When the UNESCO delegation left the area–the destruction resumed at an even larger scale.

Oskanian said the Armenian authorities are doing everything possible to end the destruction of Armenian monumen’s in Azerbaijan.
