May 28 at Yerevan State University

A gathering was held on Tuesday at Yerevan State University– in celebrating the 85th anniversary of the Independence of the Armenian Republic.

The Dean of the history department Babken Harutiunian–in opening the ceremony noted that while the First Republic was short lived–neither Soviet Armenia–nor the present independent republic would have existed had Armenia not won the battles of Sardarabad–Bash-Abaran and Karakilise. "The Armenian people gained their right to live independently," Harutiunian said.

History professor Yura Hovsepian recalled the geopolitical situation in 1918. "Despite disastrous events such as WW I and the Genocide–Aram Manoogian–Kachazouni–Dro–Simon Vratsian–and others managed to found an independent state and even expand its territories. . . It was also during these years that the Yerevan State University was founded."

Speaking on behalf of University students–Jacques Manukian presented the role of Armenian youth during the years of the First Republic–praising the contribution of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF) student organization–and noting that the scout movement was established in Armenian during that period as well.

ARF Supreme Body member Artavazd Darbinian wrapped up the event speaking about intellectuals and representatives of the political and military arena who gave birth to the First Republic.
