GLENDALE–Celebrations marking Armenia’s 12th anniversary of Independence took place at the Glendale Civic Auditorium Monday under the auspices of the Republic of Armenia’s Ambassador to the US Dr. Arman Kirakossian.
Several community leaders and representatives of organizations were on hand to celebrate the event.
Keynote speaker Ambassador Kirakossian noted that independence has not been easy for Armenia in light of war–the earthquake–and the collapse of the Soviet Union–which resulted in the severing of all external ties.
"We had to create a new economy," said Kirakossian–recalling that Armenia produced 80% of the Soviet Union’s necessary rubber. "But–today–thanks to a strong army–Armenia and Karabagh are secure."
Kirakossian spoke of the economic growth that Armenia registered in the past year–and the reconstruction of roads that have opened doors to economic prospects–thanks to the generosity of Kirk Kerkorian.
He also noted the social difficulties prevalent in the country that Armenia is trying to overcome with an aggressive poverty reduction program–anti corruption legislation–and health care reform to help create a healthy society.
