Aliyev Stresses Peace but Not Without Territorial Integrity

BAKU (Armenpress)–Immediately on his return from Moscow–Azeri President Ilham Aliyev told reporters that he does not believe in a hurried resolution to the Mountainous Karabagh conflict. "I’m no advocate of compromises in this question," he told reporters at the Baku international airport.

He emphasized that international law and justice are on the side of Azerbaijan. "Times are changing–and if we assess this from the viewpoint of the development of the country’s economic potential–time also works on our side," Aliyev continued.

"I believe that we should not make a hasty decision–we should wait."

Though stressing that Azerbaijan wants to settle the conflict peacefully–Aliyev nevertheless said a settlement is possible "only under the condition of restoring the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan–and a withdrawal of invading forces from the occupied lands."

Aliyev said that–following his Paris and Moscow visits–he is confident that the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Minsk Group–tasked with finding a resolution to the Karabagh conflict–will step up its activities. "Both the French and Russian presidents assured me that they are interested in settling this conflict," Aliyev said–adding that "The Minsk Group should not act as a detached onlooker."
